Mycelium vs. Fruiting Body
Most mushroom supplements aren't made from mushrooms. Here's what you're actually buying — and how to tell the difference.
Vesper uses fruiting bodies only. No mycelium. No grain substrate.
Dual-extracted. Third-party tested for beta-glucan content. Every product.
Shop Fruiting Body ExtractsThe Short Version
A mushroom has two main parts: the mycelium (the underground root-like network) and the fruiting body (the actual mushroom you can see). The bioactive compounds that make functional mushrooms worth taking — beta-glucans, triterpenes, hericenones — are concentrated in the fruiting body.
Most supplement brands skip the fruiting body entirely. They grow mycelium on grain (usually rice or oats), dry the whole thing — grain included — and sell it as a mushroom supplement. The result is a product that's mostly starch, with low levels of the compounds you're actually paying for.
Why Does This Matter?
Beta-Glucan Content
Beta-glucans are the primary immune-modulating compounds in functional mushrooms. Quality fruiting body extracts typically contain 15–40% beta-glucans. Mycelium on grain products frequently test below 5% — because most of what's in the capsule is grain starch, not mushroom.
Triterpene Availability
Triterpenes (like Reishi's ganoderic acids) are the adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory compounds that require alcohol extraction to capture. Mycelium contains minimal triterpenes compared to fruiting bodies — and most MOG products aren't extracted at all, meaning even what's present isn't bioavailable.
Extraction vs. Raw Powder
Mushroom cell walls are made of chitin — a tough fiber the human body can't digest. Without extraction (hot water, alcohol, or both), the bioactive compounds are locked inside and pass through your system largely unused. Most MOG products are raw powder. All Vesper products are dual-extracted.
How to Spot a Mycelium Product
- "Full spectrum" or "whole mushroom" — common marketing language for MOG
- No beta-glucan percentage listed — brands with high beta-glucan content advertise it; those with low content don't
- "Mycelium" in the ingredient list — sometimes listed, often buried
- No extraction ratio — real extracts state concentration (e.g. 8:1); raw powders don't
- Very low price point — fruiting body extraction is expensive; $15 for 60 servings is a red flag
The Vesper Standard
Every Vesper product is made from fruiting bodies only, sourced from verified growers, and dual-extracted using hot water and alcohol to capture the full compound profile. Our Gray Matter 5-mushroom blend goes further with a spagyric triple extraction that also captures mineral salts — compounds that standard dual extraction discards.
We third-party test every batch for beta-glucan content and publish results. If a product doesn't meet our minimum threshold, it doesn't ship.
