Spagyric extraction is an ancient alchemical process — from the Greek spao (to separate) and ageiro (to gather) — that separates a plant or fungus into its three fundamental components, purifies each, and recombines them into a unified whole. Applied to mushrooms, it produces the most complete and bioavailable extract possible.
While standard dual extraction captures water-soluble and alcohol-soluble compounds, spagyric extraction goes one step further: it also captures and reintegrates the mineral salts from the mushroom's own body — the inorganic compounds that dual extraction discards.
Dual Extraction vs Spagyric Extraction
| Method | Captures | Misses |
|---|---|---|
| Hot water | Beta-glucans, PSK, PSP | Triterpenes, minerals |
| Alcohol | Triterpenes, hericenones, erinacines | Polysaccharides, minerals |
| Dual extraction | Water + alcohol-soluble compounds | Mineral salts |
| Spagyric (triple) | Water + alcohol + mineral salts | Nothing — complete profile |
The Three Stages of Spagyric Processing
1. Separation (Solve)
The mushroom undergoes full dual extraction — hot water and alcohol — capturing the complete organic compound profile. The spent mushroom material (marc) is retained rather than discarded.
2. Purification (Calcination)
The spent marc is carefully incinerated at controlled temperatures, reducing it to a white ash. This ash contains the mushroom's purified mineral salts — potassium, calcium, magnesium, silica, and trace minerals — with organic residues removed.
3. Recombination (Coagula)
The purified mineral ash is dissolved and reintegrated into the dual extract. The result is a triple extract containing the complete chemical profile of the mushroom in a single, unified formula.
Why Mineral Salts Matter
Mushrooms are remarkable mineral accumulators. They concentrate potassium, phosphorus, selenium, zinc, copper, and germanium from their substrate. These minerals serve as enzyme cofactors, bioavailability enhancers, and cellular signaling molecules. In traditional spagyric philosophy, the mineral salts represent the grounding, physical principle that anchors the more volatile active compounds and makes them more effective in the body.
Spagyric Extraction at Vesper
We apply spagyric triple extraction to all five mushrooms in our Gray Matter formula — Lion's Mane, Reishi, Chaga, Turkey Tail, and Cordyceps. It's a more labor-intensive process than standard dual extraction, but it produces a more complete, more bioavailable extract that honors the full complexity of each mushroom.
Our single-mushroom extracts use dual extraction — the gold standard for individual mushrooms. Gray Matter uses spagyric triple extraction because when you're combining five mushrooms into one comprehensive formula, leaving any compounds behind isn't an option.
